The Women s Movement And The Development Of Feminism Essay
Throughout history, gender roles have been pressured on humans by society from the moment that they enter the world. Traditional gender roles of what is considered ââ¬Å"masculineâ⬠or ââ¬Å"feminineâ⬠make it hard for people to live with who do not portray these certain characteristics. Not only does society limit human identity but their sense of self worth as well. For hundreds of years, people have been raised to live in a certain gender role based on the genitalia they were born with. For example, women were raised and expected to work amongst the household where as men were to be in the work force. Society norms have made females and males feel obligated to follow traditional norms and to make them feel less of a human if they do not follow or live within these gender roles and characteristics. This setback was the spark of the womenââ¬â¢s movement and the development of feminism in the twentieth century. According to feminist writer, bell hooks, in ââ¬Å"Intro duction: Come Closer to Feminism,â⬠hooks identifies that feminism is for everyone because ââ¬Ëfeminism is a movement to end sexismââ¬â¢ (hooks 10). In other words, implying that it is not men that are the problem but the behavior and ideals sexism itself because women and men are both capable of being sexist. There was a time when a person from a low income family could believe he or she could attain the American dream without going to college. My eldest brother began working at Chevy in 1969; he was 16 years old, and he retired from Chevy in 2005. When he retired he owned three homes, three cars (one was a race car he built) a Harley Davis Motor cycle, a huge mobile home and he boasted more than $100,00. The only problem my brother had was that he could barely read or write. Thirty years ago, a young person could work at a McDonalds, over the period of two years they would become a Team Lead, and a year or two later they could be a Shift Manager. In a period of seven to ten years from the time this kid started, they could manage their own store. I did this and it only took me three years. I left food service because one day I wanted to Mickaole Walden, Ph. D. or M. D. I was going to be an engineer, but being assaulted and left with a brain injury and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder ended my military carrer; it took me twenty years to accept that I no longer had an IQ of 137. It was made clear to me very early I had to go to college. I first was told by my father that since he taught at N. I. T, The National Institute of Technology in Dallas, Texas that we would not have to pay for my college degree. Later, when I got a poor grade in Math Theorem, I decided to go into the Military to get funding for school. I have known many people who went into the military as a catalyst for education and funding for college. Today, having a way to finance ones education is as essential as higher education itself. The inequality in education is evident. At the time Sociology in Modules was written only 11 percent of kids from low income families received a degree, this is compared with Children from families in the top five percent Income level which were at 53 percent. After children from poor families enter college weather they graduate or not, they are usually left with the burden of financial aid debt, (Schaefer 2011). Having a way to pay for higher education was not an issue that concerned me or my Pops with him being an Educator, and after I completed military service and having access to the GI Bill. It was not until my daughter graduated high school that financial aid became an issue. I am currently paying off a loan for my daughter after she dropped out of Clark. She is now attending Georgia Perimeter College. I have nearly cleared one of my bank accounts to keep her in school until we can take out a loan or get a grant. Today, helping my young adult daughter attain grants and loans is painfully important. My daughter could not care less because her fiance is financially secure and I am funding her education. She doesnââ¬â¢t understand the importance of having her own source of income even if she does not need it right now. Earlier this year she and I were looking through a travel guide, she wanted us to take a one week vacation in Jamaica, (she works less than full time as a waitress). She truly suffers from false consciousness. Education is more than ââ¬Å"The knowledge or skill obtainedâ⬠(American Heritage dictionary 2001). Education is an opportunity for vertical mobility. Education is a chance for greater socioeconomic status. In order to gain knowledge, skill and a level of greater earning potential, you have to be able to pay for higher Education. Symbolism in Ellisons Battle Royal Essay Ralph Ellisonââ¬â¢s short story, ââ¬Å"Battle Royalâ⬠, is symbolic in many different ways. In one way it is symbolic of the African Americansââ¬â¢ struggle for equality throughout our nationââ¬â¢s history. The various hardships that the narrator must endure, in his quest to deliver his speech, are representative of the many hardships that the blacks went through in their fight for equality. The narrator in Ellisonââ¬â¢s short story suffers much. He is considered to be one of the brighter youths in his black community. The young man is given the opportunity to give a speech to some of the more prestigious white individuals. The harsh treatment that he is dealt in order to perform his task is quite symbolic. It represents the many hardships that the African American people endured while they fought to be treated equally in the United States. He expects to give his speech in a positive and normal environment. What faces him is something that he never would have imagined. The harsh conditions that the boys competing in the battle royal must face are phenomenal. At fir st the boys are ushered into a room where a nude woman is dancing. The white men yell at the boys for looking and not looking at the woman. It is as if they are showing them all of the good things being white can bring, and then saying that they arenââ¬â¢t good enough for it since they were black. Next the boys must compete in the battle royal. Blindly the boys savagely beat one another. This is symbolic of the African Americansââ¬â¢ fight for equality. It represents the struggle they endured, to be accepted as equals with our societyââ¬â¢s white population, upon the abolition of slavery. Blindly, our nationââ¬â¢s black population fought, not always knowing what for, just as the boys in this story fought.The segregation of schools, restaurants, and other public facilities were issues that were fiercely fought over. Often they took a stance of authority, feeling superior to the black minorities. This belief is portrayed by the menââ¬â¢s angered actions toward the boys. The electrified rug is another important piece in this story. The boys are given the opportunity to take bills and coins off of a rug, after the battle royal has been completed. As they grab for the money they receive jolts of electricity from the rug. The boys find it extremely hard not to reach for the money even though they will go through much pain in doing so. These activities again represent the African Americanââ¬â¢s struggle for equality. Even though segregation became an eventual realiz ation the blacks had to suffer much. Blacks attending schools with whites still had to endure racial prejudices and misjudgments by much of the population. The boys in ââ¬Å"Battle Royalâ⬠were given the opportunity to get money, but they had to endure the physical pain of being electrocuted in the process. The white men again are amused by these activities just as men throughout the years were amused by the activities of African Americanââ¬â¢s. The blacks were given things but with a price attached to it just as the boys were. The dream that the narrator has at the end of the story is very important as well. He describes his grandfather as having him open envelope after envelope, finally reaching one that held a document. On it was written ââ¬Å"To Whom It May Concern, Keep this Nigger-Boy Running.â⬠This represents many of the hardships that the African American people had to deal with over the years. Even though the narrator was given a degree of respect by giving his speech it was not nearly enough. The whites gave him his briefcase and congratulated him and that was it. The dream shows that they were just casting the narrator off, not really giving him anything valid at all. They said ââ¬Å"Nice job,â⬠but this really isnââ¬â¢t much
